Alleluia!
T
his year again, we
made Easter eggs with members of the Haramachi Catholic Church.
After the Easter
Sunday Mass, we held a simple celebration at Caritas Minamisoma. People from
Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines also joined us, making for a truly
international gathering.

Students from Shizuoka Salesian High School
This year, for the
first time, students from Shizuoka Salesian High School visited us. They
returned having learned so much and expressed their desire to continue this
program in the future, which was truly heartwarming.
Since today's high
school students have no firsthand knowledge of the Great East Japan Earthquake,
I hope they will share the current situation in Fukushima with as many friends
and family members as possible.
Tour of the Nagadoro District in Iitate
A couple of Caritas
Minamisoma staff members went on a tour of the environmental restoration
project in the Nagadoro district of Iitate Village. It has been legally decided
that the removed soil—equivalent to about 11 Tokyo Domes—currently stored at
the interim storage facility must be disposed of permanently outside Fukushima
Prefecture by 2045. With the aim of safely reusing three-quarters of this
soil—which has low radiation levels—the Ministry of the Environment is
conducting a demonstration project in Iitate Village to cultivate flowers,
trees, and rice. (From Caritas Minamisoma Facebook)
Parent-Child Kitchen
The
last Parent-Child Kitchen of April. New families joined us, bringing the total
to 41 people. It was a lively gathering. The days are getting longer, it's
brighter and warmer outside, and after the meal, the children were running
around energetically outdoors. We even heard some say, "I don't want to go
home; I want to stay overnight."
Magokoro Salon Members' Cherry Blossom Viewing Trip
Staff from Caritas
Minamisoma joined the group to see the cherry blossoms at Suzugaoka Hachiman
Shrine in Soma. We were blessed with good weather, and on the way back, we also
stopped at Baryo Park to enjoy the magnificent cherry
blossoms.
Blessing of the New Apartment
The
Sacred Heart Society's Minamimachi residence was vacated at the end of March. We
moved to an apartment located a 2–3 minute walk from Caritas Minamisoma. About
10 volunteers who always help us at Caritas came to assist, and the move was
completed in just half a day. We are very grateful. On April 8, Bishop Kazuo
Koda blessed the house.
Futaba Prefectural High School
It has been 15 years
since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the nuclear power station accident.
Seeing the current
state of Futaba High School from the main gate, I was once again struck by the
scale of the damage caused by the earthquake and the nuclear power station
disaster.
The
impressive school buildings remain just as they were back then, and there were
many abandoned bicycles in the bike shed. It reminded me of the shock I felt
when I saw the bike shed in front of Odaka Station around 2015.
