Chile awoke very abruptly on the morning of February 27th, trembling with the rumblings of a tremendous earthquake, measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale at its epicentre, which affected five of the twelve regions of the country.２月２７日の朝、チリは突然すさまじい地震の揺れで目が覚めました。震源地ではリヒタースケールで震度８．８．国の１２地区のうち５地区がその影響を受けました。As a result of this terrible earthquake sixty thousand families lost everything: not just material things, which can in some ways be recovered, but relatives, friends, work colleagues. So far there are 500 fatalities and countless injured.このひどい地震の結果６０，０００家族がすべてを失いました。失った物はどうにか取り返せるのですが、親戚、友人、仕事仲間はそうはいきません。今のところ、死者５００人、数え切れない人数の人たちが負傷しています。

From that moment on, the whole nation has wanted to get involved in the huge task of reconstructing the country, and countless initiatives have sprung up. Many people are looking for ways to be part of this titanic and wonderful task of rebuilding.It is certainly not just a material reconstruction; we are looking at a rebuilding that will make our people more human, more equal, more in solidarity with one another…その時から国中の人たちが国の再建という大きな仕事にかかわりたいと思いました。そして、数え切れないほどの動きが始まりました。多くの人がこの再建という巨大で素晴らしい仕事にどうしたら参加できるかを考えていました。それは確かに物理的な再建だけではありませんでした。私たち国民がもっと人間らしく、より平等に、お互いに一致していける国の再建を考えていました。

One such initiative was started by one of the most respected NGOs in our country, “Un Techo para Chile” (A roof for Chile). Its mission is to offer a fit home for those who do not have one, counting on the work of young volunteers. Following the earthquake they were authorised by the Chilean government to build twenty thousand of these emergency homes.
そのような動きの一つが私たちの国で一番大切にされているNGO、「チリに屋根を」、によって始められました。その使命は若い人たちのボランティアに頼って家のない人々に適当な家を提供することでした。地震の後、チリ政府は緊急の家を２万戸建てることを許可しました。

The School of he Sacred Heart of Apoquindo (Santiago de Chile) set about active involvement in the great crusade of rebuilding Chile after the earthquake. One hundred and forty students aged 16 and 17 voluntarily took part in the setting up of emergency houses over a five day period. It was very hard, demanding physical work. Conditions were difficult. The experience was unsurpassable.

アポキンド（サンティアゴ・デ･チリ）の聖心女子学院は地震の後のチリ再建という偉大な十字軍に活発に取り組み始めました。１６歳ー１７歳のボランティアが１４０人５日間で緊急の家を建てる仕事に参加しました。それはとてもきつい肉体労働でした。困難な状況でした。その経験は打ち勝ちがたいものでした。

We built 35 emergency homes in various areas near Melpilla.

That might not seem a lot given the enormous needs: however, the commitment of the students, teachers and others connected with the school went above and beyond mere figures through the spirit of solidarity that kept each one going with great generosity and enthusiasm.

私たちはメルピジャ近くのいろいろな地域に３５の緊急の家を建てました。莫大な必要数から思えば、これは多い数ではないかもしれませんが、生徒たち、先生たち、そして学校と関係のある方々の献身は単なる数字の問題ではなく、一致の精神によって一人ひとりが見事な寛大さと熱意で働き続けたのです。

This will doubtless be the first of many reports that will be made as we return … We are returning from an experience which cannot be adequately described, so for the moment I just want to express my gratitude.
これが、帰ってからの沢山の報告の最初のものとなります。私たちは家に戻りますが、私たちの経験したことは十分に説明できません。ですから今は感謝の気持ちだけお伝えします。 

I am grateful to the school for the trust and the chance it gave us to carry this project through, which for me, unfolded day after day like a dream.

I am grateful to each and every one who took part, for their tremendous commitment, support, love and dedication, not just for the building of the 35 emergency homes, but for the companionship, encouragement, and motivation in each of the work groups. I truly feel that what we have lived will mark us forever.
参加してくださったお一人お一人に感謝しています。皆様のすばらしい献身、支え、愛、それは35の家を建てるということのためだけでなく、作業グループの一つ一つの仲間意識、励ましあい、そしてやる気にも見られたものです。

I am grateful for all who stayed behind and replaced us in the school, all who prayed for us.. without this generosity we could never have realised our mission with any peace of mind.
学校に残って私たちの仕事を代わってくださった方々、祈ってくださった方々に感謝しています。この寛大さがなければ、心の平安なしにこの使命を果たすことは出来ませんでした。

I am grateful to those 140 students of the Sacred Heart who gave of themselves absolutely in joyful and simple service. They forgot about their own comforts, they understood and took to heart and with profound willingness that they would go to Melpilla, leaving aside their own private concerns. We can all be very proud of them, an example for all of us. 喜んでまったくの奉仕で自分を捧げてくださった１４０人の聖心の生徒たちに感謝しています。皆さんは自分の楽な生活を忘れて、また、個人的に心にかかることもおいて、メルピジャに行くことの意味をよく理解し、心でしっかり受け止め、心から喜んで参加してくれました。

I am grateful to God and to the Sacred Heart who blessed and protected us, giving us the opportunity to open our hearts to learn, to see, to listen, to look, to encounter….私たちを祝福し、守って下さった神様と聖心に感謝しています。心を開いて学び、見て、聞いて、眺め、出会う機会を与えられたことに感謝しています。
